Why is Hip-Hop talking about Bitcoin?

In 2018, Hip-Hop was the most consumed genre of music in the United States. There is no question that rap music has a huge influence on pop-culture trends. Crypto enthusiasts are always paying attention to the road to mass adoption and when a rapper talks about using Bitcoin for any reason, they should be slightly excited.

One viral rapper bringing attention to Bitcoin

One of the newest viral sensations in Hip-Hop is Teejayx6. In the fast-food era of rap, where artists compete to make better singles with similar sounds, Teejayx6 brings something new and unique to the table. His songs are step by step instructions on how to get away with credit card fraud by using Tor browsers, VPNs and a Bitcoin ATM.

“First you gotta find a site for you to load on

When you gon’ hit the Bitcoin, you can’t be petty, bro

Put your money in but can’t be nothing under a hundred, though

If you want to hit for big s***, put in a hundred more

Go on to your site and it’s gon’ tell you which address to load

Then you type that same address on the Bitcoin machine

If you put the right address it should pop up green

Then from there you done with that Bitcoin machine”

The impact of Teejayx6

Teejayx6 has an interview with No Jumper that reached 700,000 views in September, and has over 1,000,000 views on multiple music videos. All of this success has been achieved within 3 months.

Statistically, the Hip-Hop audience has been gravitating towards a bad influence recently. Rappers like 21 savage, XXXtentacion, Playboi Carti, and even Lil Uzi Vert all have violent lyrics spread throughout their songs. Teejayx6 is taking the appeal of shock value and making it a bit nerdier.

In order to appreciate what he is bringing to the table, we must acknowledge the idea of all press being good press. Obviously, Teejayx6 is showing terribly unethical and illegal use cases for Bitcoin, but he is getting pop-culture to acknowledge that it still exists.

Music about theft is not new in American culture. This music will undoubtedly result in few people being influenced by his instructions, but out of the 1.6 million people who viewed his song, it will be a very small percentage.

What Teejayx6’s notoriety will result in is an audience that thinks Bitcoin is cool. As you can see by this twitter screenshot, he has literally impacted Bitcoin adoption to some extent.

This tweet claims that at the rapper’s shows, one of his merch tables only accepted Bitcoin.

“The merch table at this Teejayx6 show only accepts Bitcoin.”

The extent to which his impact will have on pop-culture depends on how his career persists into the future. So far his mixtape has received a 7.5/10 from Pitchfork, and he has Adam22 of NoJumper claiming that it’s not only the content of his songs that make him enjoyable, but his delivery.
